For more than a century, the tasteful showcasing of top-quality, name-brand furniture and accessories has been provided by none other than Ewald Furniture, Inc. in Tiffin. The family¹s true commitment of knowledgeable service to customers and striving for total customer satisfaction has built this firm to what it is today. Their dedication has helped the company to survive and to grow through the past 103 years. On Jan. 1, 1900, Joseph N. Ewald and his brother-in-law, Charles Pahl, purchased the existing A.J. Henzy Company and became partners in the
furniture and undertaking business. Known then as "Ewald and Pahl,"  the establishment was located  at 127 South Washington Street. ³Many people have the mistaken idea that funeral and furniture facilities were together because the same companies made both the furniture and the coffins," says current co-owner Jim Ewald. "It was actually because of the convenience of horse-drawn deliveries."
The same horse could be used to pull the ambulance and hearse, as well as the wagons and sleds used to deliver furniture, Ewald explains. Pete, the family horse, was a familiar sight on Tiffin streets, even on Sundays during
family outings. In 1913, Pahl and Ewald divided the business and the furniture store became
the Joseph N. Ewald Company. In 1918, he was joined by his sons, John and Herman.  Herman¹s sons joined their father in the late 1950s upon their return from the army. "I'm sure glad my grandfather chose the furniture end," said Jim Ewald, reminiscing about the four-generation family business. "I don¹t think I would have been good undertaker."

The expanded facility his father built in 1953 on the corner of U.S. 224 and State Route 100 continued in its success. Customers were delighted with the full selection of merchandise tastefully displayed in groupings.  Customers also appreciated the easy access to the new store with ample parking space. Brothers Dick and Jim welcomed Jim¹s sons, Joe and Dan, in the mid 70s. Both work as buyers, salesmen, and assist with the bookkeeping. Jim¹s wife, Jane, came on board in the mid 80s. She buys the home accessories and also works
in sales.
